I seem to draw possums to my houses for some reason. We had the young possum who fell in love with our cat Muffin. I would go out to the shed and find Muffin and the possum sleeping together on the old futon stored there. I would look out on the porch at night and Muffin and the possum would be standing side by side eating out of the cat food bowl together. One night the possum tried to follow Muffin into the house, but my husband stopped him at the door!!!
When I delivered papers in the country, I would drive the country roads for 3 hours every night from 2 am until 5 am "dodging possums". Little suckers love to meander across the roads at night!
I stay at my mom's during the week and we have a big, fat possum who comes each night to eat bird seed that falls to the ground under the feeders. I sit on the porch in the dark, smoking cigarettes and watching the possum snack on the discarded seeds. Sometimes the big female raccoon that hangs around the area joins the possum and they will eat side by side.
Tonite, another possum incident!! The husband went outside to walk the dogs. Both of the bigger dogs made a beeline to our big cedar tree. Under neath they attacked a possum, but stopped soon after and rejoined my husband to come back into the house. My husband went outside to see what they were after, and there under the cedar tree, in the light from the porch, was a dead possum. Husband came in and got me and I went out to look. Possum was lying on it's side, it's mouth half open and unmoving. Husband and I were nearly in tears (we are avid animal lovers) thinking about the poor little possum and our "bad" dogs. I looked really hard and said "yeah, they killed it, they must have broke it's neck because there's no blood" and we went back into the house. About 20 minutes later, the husband takes out the trash and comes back in and says "he must have been "playing possum" because he is gone!!!" So happy the dogs didn't hurt him and that he was so very good at "playing dead". (also very lucky the possum didn't use his really long, nasty teeth to inflict any "payback" on the dogs!)
Possum dodged again!!
